And I Thought "Carry On, Wayward Son" Was (Relatively) Harmless

There are so many ignorant and/or crazy people out there on the internets that most sensible bloggers have realized it's not worth chasing them all down to write about - unless you decide you want to devote entire your blog to that sort of thing. Because, if you start doing it, you ARE going to end up devoting your entire blog to that sort of thing. So I generally just leave sleeping undesirables lie.

However.

This one is too good to pass up. If you're a Gawker reader, you may have seen their posted video of youth pastor Donnie Davies singing his signature song, "God Hates a Fag." Yes, he is one of those you-can-choose-not-to-be-gay Christianists.

No, it's not a joke. Unfortunately.

The best part, however, is his ministry's website, Love God's Way, which thoughtfully is compiling a list of bands for young, impressionable people to avoid - i.e., bands who are gay, or who "propogate [sic] a Gay message."

There's the offenders you would expect: Pet Shop Boys, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the Indigo Girls, Ani diFranco, Queen. (Oh, and the Village People, just in case you weren't clued into that one.) And a couple others that I didn't exactly expect, but I guess I'll buy: Wilco, Man or Astroman, Cole Porter. (They had better nip that Cole Porter thing in the bud - I hear he's all the rage with the kids these days.) But some of the list's other inclusions I find a bit mystifying ... Richard Cheese? Ghostface Killah? KANSAS?

Right now, there could be someone out there thinking, "At last. Someone has finally revealed the filthy subversion that is the band Kansas. No more will they infiltrate classic rock radio with their dastardly Gay message."

And even after doing a bit of research, I still can't figure out how Ghostface got mixed up in this whole debacle - although I did discover he has an action figure of himself, which is totally sweet.

Their list of pre-approved "Safe Bands" is only about a third of the length of the Evil Gay Bands. But don't despair - it includes Cyndi Lauper.

ADDENDUM - Should have mentioned that there is actually a good chance that it IS a joke, hard to tell with these people sometimes. I've fallen for it the other way around before (laughing it off at first, then finding out they're serious). Parody or not, enjoy.
